You may know this but very few of the younger generation will know what the word markhor literally means. Yes, if you don't know, we will tell you. Basically, the word markhor is a combination of two words, one of which is Persian and the other is Pashto. The word mar means 'snake' and khor means 'eater'. ' Is. Think of it as "eating the enemy." By the way, Markhor does not eat snakes. The reason for Markhor's name may be that it resembles a snake with its curved horns or that this animal kills snakes.

According to folklore, the markhor kills the snake and chews it, and the bite causes foam to come out of its mouth, which falls down and becomes dry and hard. People find this dry foam and use it to treat snake bites. Markhor is mainly the largest species of wild goat, which is found mostly in the northern parts of Pakistan, especially in Chitral, Kailash and Hunza areas. Six types of markhor are universally recognized.

It is similar to Astor Markhor, Kashmiri Markhor and Pir Panjal Markhor and has large and flat horns which are almost straight. In Afghanistan, it is found in the monsoon forests of Laghman and Nuristan. In India, Pir Panjal is found in the mountain range and on the disputed border of Jammu and Kashmir. Evidence of its presence has also been found in the forests of the Jhelum Valley.

Until 1978, the Kabuli Markhors existed only in Afghanistan, between the Kabul series, the Safi Mountains, and between them. Due to their large numbers of prey, they are now found in the most remote and inaccessible areas of Kabul Province. In Pakistan, their population is found in remote areas of Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Dera Ghazi Khan in Punjab. According to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Forest Department, they have populations in the Mardan and Sheikh Badin areas.

There are at least 100 markhors in the Pakistani part of the White Mountains (Kurram and Khyber Agency). Most people do not know that this national animal of Pakistan is the rarest species of animal in the world. Markhor is honored to be among the 72 or 74 animals whose images are included in a collection of special coins issued by the World Wildlife Organization.
